Spare tire doesn't want to fit in trunk and other stuff

Post by fluxcap on Wed Jul 30, 2008 9:26 pm

Anyone else ever have this problem. I got new tires mounted yesterday and the spare doesn't want to seat all the way in the spare well. It's a stock rim with a 165r15 nankang. I've got an aftermarket gas tank, and I'm going to try and loosen it and move it back, since I think the tire may be jamming up against it. But if that doesn't fix it, I'm not sure what the problem is. I didn't get to mess with it very long, so I may just need to look at it again when I'm not flustered (see story below). Hell, I may just need to take some air out of it.

I also installed new shocks yesterday. He is the flustering part. The rears went on in like they should, no problems and each side took a minute. The fronts were a different story. I couldn't figure out why the shock would not fit on the lower mount. Turns out the bushing from the old shock was still on the mount. It was the same way on both sides and they were rusted tight. It took about an hour of hammering, chiseling, prying, and dremeling to get those old bushings off. Mad

I havent had any luck with putting fully aired 165 in the spare tire well in my cars, but I will say that most of my cars have taken taps in the front so that could have a lot to do with it. I will check my 67 tomorrow.

Thanks Bryce. As you know, I think my car has been tapped on the front side at some time, but the spare tire well looks perfect. No creases or ripples anywhere. Down the road, I plan on getting a narrow beam and dropping the car which will require a smaller tire, so the problem should go away then when I get a slightly smaller spare. This weekend I'll check the pressure in the tire and adjust the gas tank and see if that doesn't help.

I had the same problem with my 165s fitting in the spare tire well. I have an old bias ply 165 from my other car that wasn't dry rotted and looked pretty good so I slid that in as the spare and it fits perfectly. The 165 radials are just a little too big.

Well, I'm glad I'm not the only one. The tires I took off were at least 20 years old and were the 5.60x15 size. They looked rough and I wouldn't have trusted them even for a rope swing. Smile

Yeah I verified that my 165 would not fit down in the spare tire well in the 67

Thanks Bryce! I let some air out and see if I can get it to go. If I have to let too much air out to where the spare is useless, I guess I'll just have to get a smaller spare.

And bumblebuggy, spares are overated, but it beats the alternative of keeping a nice pair of walking shoes in the spare well Laughing. I guess I could fill the well with a bunch of cans of fix-a-flat.

AAA never hurts, and their card fits in the spare tire well easily. Very Happy
(Ps...I've got spares....cables, fixaflat, string, duct tape and other parts, but no fifth wheel for now)

I don't know about you guys, but if me and the wife were ever out for a cruise and a tire went flat and I told her I didn't have a spare...this basketball would be my head Basketball. Especially as hot as it has been lately.

Let me fiddle around with it this weekend. If I don't have any luck, I just may take you up on that. Thanks!
