1976 Westy I picked up last Saturday

Post by Rwflyboy on Wed May 07, 2014 9:27 pm

Hey everyone! New here on the site. I bought a 76 Westy with no rust showing on this bust. It was on the Samba and Winton-Salem Craigs list. Though the canvas is torn, a new one was provided..so it's time to get that "short list" done so we can get started camping soon!

Yes we are in the Cleveland area (actually Wauka Mountain area)
.. We cant make the full trek yet... might like to meet up at Rabey's shop though. Right now ARI in Cleveland is repairing the shift linkage. Would hardly go into reverse, and 1st and 3rd put your knuckles against the dash.
Anybody know that repair shop or have one they suggest for working on our vintage bus.... Thanks in advanced.

Have the shift coupler replaced so reverse works now and the shifting is tighter now (not such a wide distance from 1st to 4th gear knob distance travel). Some oil leaks were determined to be come from the dipstick boot (no surprise there.) Oil cooler or oil cooler seal and also the oil filter housing they said. It is more of a drip than anything as it uses less than 1qt in 200 miles. Also a whine in the gearing, but it goes away once the load is taken off and it is maintaining a comfortable speed in 3rd or 4th.

If it is not an automatic you can put 1 quart of Lucas oil stabilizer in it. It will quiet down the trans and make it shift easier.

Man. That is a good looking Westy. They are popping up all over the place. I want to get mine going but rebuilding a type 4 is hard on the wallet.

Thanks guys!!! Needing the pan that covers the very bottom below steering and the pedals. Not sure which pan it is. A little point in the right direction as to what it is called anywhere to find one would be helpful. Thanks in advance.
Got the headbanger cabinet in and it looks so much better.

Re: 1976 Westy I picked up last Saturday

We have been busy since posting here about our bus. Changed out the tent first thing. We then put a new 78 2.0 ltr engine with hydraulic lifters, Luk clutch, electronic distributor, axles with CV joints, 0916 rib trans, changed the fuel lines to metal in some areas and put good German lines where we couldnt use metal in August. In September we used por 15 on the whole floor (cargo, walkway and cab), Por 15 on known potential rust areas on exterior, two coats of paint and 3 coats of Auto paint (4,1,1 ratio) using a gravity fed spray gun with a compressor putting out 6.5 cfm at 100 psi. Wife picked the color and off we started painting and completed it in 10 days including pulling interior and putting it back together.
