VW Junkyard- RIPOFF

$500 and up a car, but a $20 entry fee.  Seems like a rip off to me, especially if nothing is worth rebuilding ):<.

everything in that picture looks like it's been sitting in the moist dirt and grass for a LONG time...the bottom half of most of those cars will be shot

Met this guy at circle yer wagens. Decent enough guy, said he bought out an old vw dealership a long time ago. Has quite a few parts. I know he has or at least had a couple decent early cars. Couple ovals and rag tops. He was wanting anywhere from 1000 to 1600 on them. Kinda high on his prices but he might work with ya

if he takes the 20 dollar entrance fee off of parts you buy, or cars, that's not so bad

Not bad assuming he has reasonable prices.  Seems like a rip off tactic to me the more I think about it.  Why should I have to pay to consider buying something.  If everything he has is so far gone its not worth fixing, then you just wasted your time and $20.  That's like going to a car show and having to pay each vendor $20 to look at what they got.  he may be a nice guy, but con artists usually are Wink.  Shoulda put this in the heads down section :/. I just flagged it as SPAM from 3 different phones, and 2 different computers!

I agree. He probably knows his stuff is worthless and I am betting whoever inherits that stuff will end up crushing it. People are so strange.

I bought some stuff from the guy at CYW. Nice guy and had alot of parts. Had alot of cool project cars on poster boards also, some good deals and some iffy.I dont blame the guy for charging some kind of fee. It keeps the tire kickers and time wasters away. He refunds you the 20 bucks back if you buy anything. I paid 7 bucks to get in CYW,bought over 600 hundred dollars worth of stuff and didn't get my 7 dollars back.

I have a rusty 67 in my yard that is pretty much worthless. Guess I could charge a fee to come look at it, knowing there arent any good parts left. $20 isnt a lot of money. Its the principal. No one pays an entry fee to go to a used car lot and look around. And the 7 dollars at CYW isnt to look at parts, its to fund the event. Trophies. Event location. Etc.

I agree. Keeps the looky loo's out. But, with that said when I call about parts I should get a accurate description or photos before I made the trek up there.

Knowing you have rusty junk, no you shouldn't charge. But it is worth something to haul in all the stuff, have access to parts, and take time out of your schedule to spend the day standing around while people rummage and then don't buy. As far as CYW, I agree with paying an entry fee. I was pointing out that it is not free at SOME shows to look through the vendor sections when you take in to consideration that there is usually an admission fee, not 20 bucks, but there is a fee.

I agree with damon23. Keeps the looky loos out. If your too stingy to pay for wasting an hour of the man's time when he's already told you he'll refund the $20 if you buy something, then stay home. An probably, if you can't afford to waste $20, then you shouldn't be looking for parts to begin with!Evil or Very Mad

This method also keeps the five finger discounter out of the yard. If something does get taken, he has got your $20.

I'm so happy for you, that you can afford to waste 20's.  thank you for sharing that Very Happy

ridgerunner962 wrote:....wasting an hour of the man's time....
HIS time?  If all he's got is rusty crap not worth repairing, then it's my time he's wasted!  What's wrong with you?

How many times have you gone to see a car advertised only to discover it was a rusty pile of shit?  You're telling me you wouldn't have minded paying $20 to go see each one?  Why should anyone have to pay $20 because this guy is too lazy to list detailed pictures of each of his cars?  If he made detailed ads for each car, with pictures, prices and descriptions, we would atleast have a better idea of what hes got.  Then I could see a $20 fee because then you atleast know what youre getting into.  But since he's too lazy for that, the ONLY option is to go see it in person.  He's the seller.  If he wants to sell his cars, he needs to do the leg work to make a sale happen.  Why should the customer pay him to do what he should have done?  Am I the only one who can't believe how bass akwards that is?  I guess used car lots should stop listing any details or prices on their cars, and just start charging admission to view their cars too right?

I wouldn't mind a fee if I know exactly what he's got and what his prices are.  Then if I don't buy its my fault.  But we know NOTHING of what he's got or the condition!  Some of y'all need to check your heaterboxes, I think some of you are breathing in a little too much carbon monoxide -_-

I think it would be hard to post pictures and descriptions of 80+ cars. Car lots have multiple employees, some are strictly internet sales who's job is to do nothing but keep the internet updated. Some lots even use outside internet companies to keep their inventory updated. This guy is merely offering you a chance to come look, I doubt ALL 80 cars are rotted beyond repair. I saw some pics of a couple of ovals that weren't bad for less than 2 grand. (Not the one posted on Samba)Car lots make their living from selling cars, of course they aren't going to charge you to come look. I doubt this is how this guy supports his family.

gold doesn't lay on the ground , you have to dig it up it takes work and cost money to get it out of the ground. after all, you want his stuff. you don t have to go out there if you don't want to. there must be at least 20 dollars worth of something out there you can use . or you can sell at the next show you go too.

That's exactly my point, if he's unable to take the time to post up pictures, descriptions, and prices of his cars, then we have no clue about anything he's selling. The ONLY option is to go see what he's got in person. Why on earth is he charging admission for people to potentially come and spend money with him? IF he's got reasonable prices and the cars aren't in bad shape, then yeah it's worth it, but IF they are too rusty and he's overpriced, then you just wasted your time AND money. We've all been to swap meets where people want alot for crap. It's all a huge question mark. Yeah $20 isn't a lot of money, but there's just no reason for it. It's the principle of it! It takes effort to sell anything, would you not agree? It's called advertising. Either it takes time to post an ad, or it takes time to have people come to potentially buy it. It would prolly take a lot less time and effort to have people come by and check out the cars versus posting ads. Im sure there are going to be a lot of people who are genuenly looking for a car and have the cash, who will be deterred by an admission.

I showed this ad (didn't say anything about it, just sent it) to a buddy of mine who's been looking for a project ghia. He sent me back this "... $20 to get in, screw that, what an a**hole". XD. I'm not the only one who finds an admission fee a ripoff. If you don't mind potentially blowing $20 for no reason, go for it. But for me it's just bad business and I'm not supporting it.

I agree that there is atleast $20 WORTH of stuff I can use.  The question is, will he want $20 for it?

And yes I may want his stuff, but since when has it EVER been up to the customer to pay for their own advertising?  He's asking the customer to pay for advertising his junk!  Thats so friggin backwards Rolling Eyes  He's the seller.  It's up to HIM to make his items tempting enough for people to want to buy.  I can see if he's selling some super rare car, but he's not.  I can go ANYWHERE and find a ghia, or bug.  And I will.  And I'm sure most will as well.

I guess it boils down to whether you want to gamble it or not. To me, it would almost be worth the 20 dollars to get to spend the day looking and all the vws and what rare parts you might find. When he was set up at CYW, he had some oval pieces and early ghia parts that was priced reasonably, so I know hes got some goodies.Cool

I dont give $5 to my own kids without them earning it. Im certainly not going to gamble with $20's to some shmuck who wants the customer to do all the work. But then again, i dont gamble at all. No one will win this discussion. Everyone has their own opinion. If you want to give him $20 then go right ahead. Then try to buy a $5 part from him and see what happens. Bet it will cost $20. Oh, and whoever goes to see this place, please post pictures of your treasures.  Bugman, we are on the same page.

Yeah, no point in discussing it anymore. If someone doesn't mind risking $20, go right on ahead, it's still a free country (well for now...... Sorta, XD). Lol @ the $5 thing. That's how I was raised, to EARN your money, not beg for it. I find it so wrong when I see school sports teams with buckets asking for money.

I was told people were going out looking opening the cars doors and decks leaving them open to the weather and he was charging because he was having to go and close everything up. He had to spend his time closing up after everybody so why should he have to waste his time if you came just to look and waste his time by not buying anything. If the principal it bothers you there is a simple way to alleviate that feeling.
