First trip to Milledgeville in the Bug!

Post by ridikas on Wed Jul 31, 2013 9:43 pm

I live about 2hours away from Milledgeville where I attend GCSU. This is the first trip I've taken in my bug and driven it for such a long period of time. Is there tips or things to watch out for? I changed the oil and adjusted the valves yesterday and I will be bringing my tool kit too.

Hey josh don't be paranoid the bug when tuned and maintained is still one of the best cars on the road. it will let you know when something is wrong. keep it maintained and don't drive it like a bat out of hell and it run for a long time. the germans were smart people. in between services if you hear a rattle, squeak, tap just trace it down soon as you hear it .. and you will be fine. Worked perfect. Dipstick was a little hot on the way back though, I need to get a rear engine bay seal to prevent some of that exhaust from being recycled in the motor.

Josh,
My rule of thumb on an ACVW engine is if after a run on the interstate, I can grab the dipstick and it is UNCOMFORTABLE to hold on to, but you can, then you are OK.
If it attempts to brand your skin with a "p" shape from the thumb hole and your 1st instinct is to pull your hand away and lick it like a dog, then it is too hot...
If you were able to hold on to it, you were probably OK.
The seal is a great idea and never hurts though.
We have been blessed with cooler than normal temps this summer...

This is a great description of using your fingers to check your oil temp.
I was worried at first with my engine temp, then I picked up a long dial thermometer that I can drop down the dipstick. If it is "uncomfortable" it is around 200 degrees
