Need help again... Points and condenser.

Post by Brooks424 on Sun Jul 28, 2013 9:47 pm

Ok, I drove Gretchen to work a few weeks ago and a couple guys said it sounded rough on start up. They recommended doing the points an condenser, they said it would be an easy fix. They said I was capable of doing it. They were wrong. Ha! So here's the story, I bought brand new Bosch points and condenser from ProFlow thinking it would be an easy parts swap. I took the old off and put the new on. Now she won't start. Damn! Adjusted adjusted and adjusted some more. Still nothing. I even put the old back on. Still nothing. Who wants to come over to the house and help me with this? I'm obviously not capable of this. I would take it to some one but i have no way of getting it anywhere. After she's runnin we'll go grab a brew and Mexican on my tab.

Did you reset the timing after you put the points in?

Make sure the points are sitting flush with the inside of the distrubutor.

Reset the timing? Oh hell, no one said anything about that. Now I know I'm screwed. Ha!

Fayetteville - not sure on that.

It's only about an hour away.
Did you take the distributor out of the car when swapping points and condenser? If not The timing is fine. Hope you get it fixed Very Happy

When you gapped the points, did you make sure you gapped them on the little bumps on rotor? They should open and close when you twist it. To reset the timing turn your crank pulley to Top dead center, then align it with the 7 degree mark which is right of TDC. Get a timing light and attach the clap to the condenser of the coil. Then ground the other side. Rotate the Distrubutor til the light goes off. And may the force be with you!

No I didn't take the distributor off. I did ha e to twist it to get the condenser off. But I marked it before I twisted it and put it back to where it was.

Timing being off isnt going to keep it from firing at all, but yes, if you changed points, you WILL have to reset timing. Point dwell affects timing, but timing doesnt affect dwell. Anyway, What kind of distributor are you running? Sounds like something isnt connected back, or the points are adjusted way way wrong. Turn the engine by hand and just make sure that the points open and close. Meaning, when they close, they touch. You can also turn the engine so that the points are closed, turn on the ignition switch, and use a screw driver to force them open. They should spark.

I beg you, haha! I don't see why changing two little parts can make that big of a difference with starting. I knew I shouldn't have messed with it.

Those two little parts are HUGE components of the ignition system!  I don't see where you ever answered, have you turned the engine over by hand and made sure the new points are actually opening and closing as each lobe of the distributor shaft passes the felt block on the points?

And...... Nothing. My uncle came over tonight and he had a better clue than I did about it. And it boggled his mind. Changed the points and condenser to the new ones and made sure everything was adjusted right. (Feeler gauge on the points and the 009 back where it was to begin with). Watched a few YouTube videos on it and with some more adjusting it almost fired off. But close doesn't count. Gonna get a timing light tommorrow.

Timing light wont do much good without it running. Did you happen to get a plug wire crossed?

take a test light make sure it has fire on hot side of coil the + turn the key on to ck. if it dose go to the neg - side of coil . spin the motor over by turning the key the wire, the one going to condenser should blink. if not ck wire going to distr. make sure its not shorting out to dist housing, may be a bad new condenser . with key on point closed take a screw driver and open points, they should spark.

No I didn't take any of the plug wires off, because my luck I would've crossed something. I have a test light but the bulb is bad in it. Go figure. With owning a VW I need to know how to work on them but it seems like all I do is screw it up. My next option is finding a car trailer I can borrow to take it to someone.

Your whole experience sounds like déjà vu to me. About a week ago I had the same problem, my distributor wasn't sliding down all the way in the shaft. I turned it both ways clockwise and counter clockwise and it slid down just a little. And what do you know,it cranked I adjusted the timing and it works. Also when it slid down I tightened just a bit to hold it.

Yes, I do remember double checking that last night. That's what I don't understand what I'm missing. There are only so many things to do/check.
