front rotor rubbing caliper bracket

Post by kyleb on Wed Jul 10, 2013 3:12 pm

hello,

I have a 65 beetle dune buggy with 4 wheel disc brakes. I recently purchased this buggy and I am restoring it. I have just removed and replaced the wheel bearings/races. This was a challenge in itself finding the correct parts. The bearings and races and seals were all replaced and they are all the correct parts. I have checked and returned enough of them this week to feel confident that I have all the same parts.

The actual hub/brake parts say AMS and Wilwood. by the way, I know little about the older VW world, so excuse my ignorance. Basically I have an AMS front hub with bolted on rotor that spins on the VW spindle. the AMS caliper mounting bracket bolts do have close tolerances to the rotor, but before taking this thing apart, all 4 wheels would spin freely.

Rear wheels are fine. Front wheels - both sides have the same issue. When the spindle nut becomes about half way tight, the rotor starts to touch the caliper bracket bolts.

I don't understand why since every part removed has been replaced. Am I missing something?

fyi, from the inside -> out, I have seal, inner bearing/race, outer bearing/race, washer, spindle nut. Am I missing a part that should have been there in the first place?

help

A few things that I thought about- can the bolts and nuts to the caliper bracket be turned around to point away from the rotor?

Are there some countersunk bolts available that would give you clearance?

Lastly, can the caliper bracket be taken off, and mounted to the back of the spindle?

Just throwing out a couple of suggestions- post up some pictures if you can so we can see what's going on

and, Good Luck!!

I'll need to back out there to look at it...but I think it may be possible to place the caliper bracket behind the spindle like you mentioned. If I did this, I may have to modify it so it can sit flush. Also, adding back the extra distance on the bracket for the caliper to sit properly over the rotor. Time to go back out there and stare at it.

to answer the other Qs you had....reversing the bolt would make it worse actually, since the head of the bolt is rubbing now.

I may look into some flatter head bolts. Maybe welding it could be better than anything.

I'd search Hi and Low before welding

When you say touching the caliper bracket bolts are you referring to the head of the bolt or the threaded end of the bolt ?

If it's the threaded end you just need shorter bolts or use washers at the head end of the bolt so the threaded end does not go all the way through.

correction, the caliper bracket bolt head is rubbing against the back of the hub assembly itself. The rotor bolts up to the hub assembly just outside of the radius of where the bolt is rubbing.

The blue seal you see in the pictures is not supposed to be there - It's the old one right behind the replaced seal. I put it there temporarily just to see if it would spin freely. The caliper bolt is not touching with that extra seal there, so imagine the seal gone.

Looks like you did not remove the caliper bracket, what about the rotor to hub? Is the rotor offset in any way? Did you even separate them?

The ONLY thing(s) that have changed were the bearings? That can be the only thing that is now wrong! Did you change the races? or just the cages?

You may need to go to an industrial supply place (Motion Industries or such) with the old bearings. What you are buying may look correct, but are obviously not.

That has to be it. There wasn't a spacer to begin with...which doesn't surprise me. There have a been a lot things wrong with this buggy so far.

Everything I removed: dust cap>spindle nut>washer>outer bearing/race>inner bearing/race>seal.

Welp, I dropped by Moon Aircooled today - VW shop in Gay, GA.

I have learned that not one piece is a VW part. The hub, brakes, bearings, spindle....all aftermarket. Which makes things so much fun to figure out.

Anyway, I removed the caliper bracket and now have a slightly thicker(wider) rear hub seal. I set the bearings, torqued the nut to screw driver hand tight....this is new to me. I used to sealed bearings. With the wheel still off, the hub spins smooth and about a full turn by itself.

I feel confident everything bearing related it correct. Not to figure out the bracket.

Can the bracket be moved to the back side....meaning take out the two bolts and move it from the face of the spindle to the back side.
That would move the head of the bolts farther from the rotor.
Worth a shot I guess.

The bracket would need to be modified to fit, it wouldn't be a simple take off and re-bolt it back on....but I'll have to do something like that.

Some of the new disc brake kits need to be shimmed or milled where the caliper meets the bracket.

I always center the caliper opening on the disc.  Washers placed wisely can fix it in a pinch.

From the pics, it looks like you need flat head screws to fasten the bracket to the spindle.  The brackets will need to be countersunk appropriately.  Any local machine shop can do it for you. Take screws with you, so they can see if you have 82 degree or 90 degree heads on them.
