Hoodrat. My 1960 pile of hatred.

Post by uBER_SLO on Fri Mar 08, 2013 2:27 pm

I guess I'll finally make a build thread about my beetle. I bought this car just over a year ago now and it's come quite a ways. I got it from Steve Scott who had found it in a barn. He fiddled with it for a while, but never got it road worthy. Thanks to Drew and Tim Baker I've had a place to let this car blossom.

We've redone all of the brake system. (With the help of Mr Wildo.
All new steering components.
5" narrowed beam
Drop spindles
4" jer fab drop plates one click
145/65 up front
165/80 in rear

Hope to be doing some business with Chadd and get some new shoes for this dirty hobag.

I tried to get it done for Cruise the Coop but the driver's seat didn't like its placement so it basically fell out on the first test drive. So I'm gonna be doing some pans pretty soon.

Also hoping to redo the wiring in her as well. So far, only one headlight and one tail light work.

The day I bought it.

How it looks after lots of easy off and a few parts

Little update.

Found some thing drums on the samba thanks to Tim Baker and got them in Monday.
Took them to Hank Tuesday to get machine down.

Then took em to work and resurfaced them.

Hoping to have them, and the new wheels and tires, on the car by next weekend.

Little update.
Got the drums on today. The difference is pretty comical.

Now I'm dealing with this debacle.

What's left of the drivers pan

Had the day off yesterday, so I spent it with ole hoodrat.
Got the wheels on, rolled the fenders, played with some electrical, and finally went on a real test drive.
But of course that was short lived because some trash clogged up my hard fuel line on had me and Drew broke down. We got it back to the shop and it took forever to finally break the awful mess up and blow it out of the line.
After that Tim, Drew, a myself finished assembly on my roofrack and got it on the car.
Still having parking light/brake light issues, Tim said he would take a look at it today for me. So I'm gonna pray for the best.
Goin to put insurance on it today and hopefully be driving it by Friday.

The wheel fitment with the suspension at full droop.

I'd say I can deal with this height.

I dropped the front a little more after this picture but you get the idea.

And heres some more artsy fartsy for ya.

Big thanks to Drew and Tim Baker for all the help and support. It's definitely kept me going.

Looks right! I don't think the lower front fender trim is going to be there for long, I drug mine off in a couple days Laughing Good thing you ended up with some flat pans, pretty sure it would be near sitting on the factory floors out back. What size tires did you end up with on the rear?

Thanks. Yea I'm probably gonna lose a few things going down the road but that just mean more clearance to go lower lol. The passenger rear pan is still mostley there, for now, and it scrapes potholes lol. I'm running a 195/50r15 on a 7in wide wheel. Any wider and it would be all in the fender.

We're you able to get your lights squared away? I love the snowflake tails but the bulb holders can be frustrating. I always hated messing with the housings on mine when they actually worked for fear of putting it back on and have it not work lol. I didn't see if you were running 6 volts or 12. Car looks kick ass!

Thank you.
Drew and Tim helped me out and got the lights figured out. They're my heroes. Also, i need to thank Kyle for hooking me up with a good 6v headlight.
I've left it 6 volt but we will see if I can put up with it. Haha.
Since I wasn't able to drive it this week to give it a good shake down, I'm not gonna be able to attend BaP. Crying or Very sad

Good deal! Keeping it 6 volts is cool especially if the generator is still kicking, very different by today's standard. Really the only big drawback I have found is getting bulbs quickly. I ended up with enough lights to be kinda legal and ordered all new replacements online. I was able to find the headlights at a local parts store that still had 2 they were like $8.00 ea lol. I'll probably keep mine 6 until the generator dies. Different story if you need to power up stuff though.

Yea we'll see how long I can stand it. I need to pick up a damn 6v charger because all of mine are normal cars. Lol.

Talked to Tim last night and he said he's got me a set of decent bumpers. I'm excited for that.

Attack chicken, how have I not seen you running around in your car? I live in Hiram. Shocked

Haha I don't know, I work downtown and don't get to drive it as much as I would like. I did manage to find a way to work that is smooth enough and have driven it twice this week. It's almost 70 miles round trip and the roads on that end are WWWWAAAYYYY jacked up! I'm probably getting close to the 1000 mile mark since mine has been on the road and I'm getting a little more brave every time I drive it. I live off Ridge road and usually see VW's when I'm not in mine Laughing I did see a guy today on the way home in Powder Springs that had a white late model with a roof rack, and the other day on Villa Rica that had a lowered flat black bug, he crossed into my lane and scared the dook outta me affraid Very Happy But those have been the only bugs I have seen while in mine since moving here in January.
