Wipers Won't Shut off

Post by drvr8 on Thu Mar 07, 2013 11:26 am

When I got the car the wipers didn't work... turns out they weren't hooked up at all. I hooked them up... but now they don't turn off at all... any suggestions. It's a '61 converted to 12v.

Thanks,

Joel

Are they really fast? I would guess the prior owner didn't convert the wipers the 12volt, and therefore, just unhooked them.

I've read on the samba that 6volt wipers will work for a while on a 12volt system, but they are very fast. In some instances, the mechanism is moving fast enough that it will actually buzz by the park position and keep on going.

Yes they are pretty fast... so I guess I need to get the armature from WW... if I can find out if I have SWF motor or not... if I don't... what do I do?

Sploval53... I have a full blown list that I'm bringing with me when I come to your shop... probably won't be till next week though.

Thanks guys!

Yeah, Tried my wipers out in the '62 last night, same thing. REALLY FAST. so I shut them down and will now look at the voltage regulators...
Could a 6 V regulator for a generator be used? would it fry if it was hit with the already regulated 12V?
I think 6V generators are capable of like 10 Volts any way, right?

If it's an SWF motor, the casing will have the logo, just peek under the hood and you'll see it (may need a small mirror). More than likely it is an SWF unit. I think bosch made some as well, but the majority are SWF.

If you happen to have one of the few non SWF motors, there is always the volt-a-drop.

These work fine, but they do get hot, so you just have to make sure they aren't laying against anything.

You could try one of these. I have one on my 66 it goes up to 3 amps. It works, but it hasn't had a good work out
