1970 Fastback

Post by Hobug on Sun Jan 27, 2013 7:24 pm

I made a trade today and brought home a 70 Fastback. It is automatic and still fuel injected. It spent 25+ years in a barn and is very original; even the spark plug wires are original. It is Savannah Beige and while there is some patina (surface rust Laughing ) the paint should buff out pretty well. It runs, drives, and stops, but is not road worthy yet. I need to clean the fuel system from the tank to the injectors and go thru the brakes.

72 Bug for trade loaded and leaving.

Made it to the trade.

Thar she blows: Very Happy

Loaded up to go to her new home.

It looks like Pete is killing my son, but he didn't. (really)

Looks like a good trade, Fastback looks very solid.

Most of our Car trips stop in a lot of Bojangles so I side with Pete!

He's got the hots for a Fastback right now. Funny thing is last week there was about 6 on the Samba for sale. You never see them but since "The Man" is looking they come out of the wood work. Don't worry just an inside joke.

Very clean ride, I like that. They are different and you don't see many. I'm after a nice Notch, around '66 or so. Nice post to start..."What's on your wish list?"

Very Happy I am kinda of looking for a fastback and found a really nice one on the samba, but I think I am going to hold out for a bus though.

I know it doesn't have a windshield, but not sure about the trim. I can check if I get a chance to get over there sometime tho.

Think I have a piece or two of trim left from my square. Certainly have a pair of front seats, couple fans, and some other doodads.

Funny that you said this....its mine now! I am super pleased with how solid this car is. It moves to the top of the list right after the buggy is driving!

Re: 1970 Fastback

Post by Attorney Isaiah Loophole on Tue Aug 25, 2015 9:21 pm

Since I am waiting on parts for the bay I decided to try and get the brakes and maybe some lowering done on the fasty. I have been slowly gathering brake stuff over the last month or so.  I also put together a set of sprintstars.  Two 4.5s from the front of O'Bugga with 165/60/15s and two 5.5s for the rear with 195/65/15s. The 5.5s are not deep dished like I had on the back of O'Bugga and actually fit under the rear fenders nicely.

Anyway after dealing with a few issues including a broken picnic table my Dad needed welded, a frozen adjuster on the passenger rear and a brake clip on the passenger rear that was ridiculously hard to take off I only ended up finishing the brakes and lowering on the front.  I hope to finish up the rear tomorrow.  I ended up installing two new calipers with new pads and new brake hoses on the front.  As far as the lowering the car it was already a little saggy in the rear so I think I am going to leave that alone for now.  The front was being snobby (nose up) and even with 165/60s on the front it still sat nose up (along with the added fender gap of the smaller tires.  So today I lowered the front at least 2 splines maybe 3.......I kind of lost count on the first side and just matched up the second side......Its not low but definitely lower in the front now with a little rake.  I didn't take any pictures today so maybe tomorrow.......

I started working on the brakes. I replaced the calipers and pads, wheel cylinders, shoes, adjusters and all four rubber hoses. Man the passenger rear hose was a big time pain to replace. I started bleeding everything out and the back did great but I couldn't get any fluid out of the front. Not exactly sure what is wrong but neither caliper is getting fluid. I am getting fluid to the master cylinder just not out of it.

The floor in the car is pretty solid but it has a good bit of surface rust on it.  Also the headliner is split and falling down.  Today I decided to do some cleanup work.  I got the seats out, headliner out, most of the tar board off the tunnel and I cut down the high back seats into low backs.  I hope to wire brush the floors tomorrow and get some paint on the floor. I still need to fix the master cylinder but I am unsure how I want to do it.  Just buy a chinese one or rebuild the one that is in the car with the guts from a beetle master cylinder.....
