Started to get the panels and interior back together. We installed a rubber/vinyl type wood looking floor in it. Looks pretty good for what it is. Easy to install. She has been driving it around town lately and is getting used to the way it drives. Still have to sort out brakes and torsion bar adjustments. I'm procrastinating on that one cause it looks like a PITA to do.

I had replaced the wiring harness in my 72 super a while back.  While the harness was put together well, and good quality, the instructions were complete crap.  I've had a few issues, that I finally figured out today.  Got all my lights working, and replaced the turn signal and tail light housings too.  I even got the reverse lights working, I forgot VW's had those tongue

Got the dual Kadrons on the 1776 SP.
WOW, I had to upgrade the mains to 135's, but WOW.
Shift points are:
2nd to 3rd at 45 MPH, 3rd to 4th at 65 MPH @ 4500 rpm.
Power band is at 2800 ~5000 RPM at 5200 rpm the engine sounds like a lion roaring out of the carbs.
(this engine has a stock Cam in it, I didn't build it.)
I have yet to get it to the interstate, but took it on a highway speeds and it is "perky".
With the old 1500 SP @ ~4200 was 93MPH (the front end was squirley from lift...)
I do not think the safe top speed is going to get any higher (I like to feel like I am still steering), but I believe that I will get to that speed faster... I still need to do some tuning, the engine feels like it surges slightly when at medium peddle. ( I will look into the air mixture screws... does that sound right?)

Camped in Cherokee Thursday thru Sunday. We spent the day enjoying the mountain roads, Clingmans Dome and Gatlinburg on Friday.  Saturday we got up early and headed over the mountain into Sevierville for circle yer wagens.  Picked up a couple of 5.5" four lug sprints stars while I was there.  Right at 700 miles on the Sno-Cone Bus and the only issue we had was a piece of trash in the main jet about 15 minutes from the house on the way home.

I have seen this before but I think it's a pretty cool bug truck!

I love Cherokee, I plan to make a lot more trips that way. I'm glad the bus drove good. Can you tell me where the section of road with water falling off the side of the mountain and you can drive under it.

There are a bunch of other falls in that area also Pat. Definitely a cool day trip to take. Curvy mountain roads and great scenery.

Re: What did you do to your volkswagen today?

Post by ASBug on Wed Jan 07, 2015 10:02 am

Spent 2.5 hours turning 2 Saphire XVII 8 tracks into 1 working unit.
I bought one on here a few months ago that just refused to work, so I took it and another "core" unit I had and put them together.
The Core unit would play for awhile and then the motor would start to overheat and smoke... Also would not change track's.
The newly purchased unit would play but eat tapes, after sacrificing a bluegrass, Steely Dan, and a Willie Nelson cartridge I gave up trying to make it work.
Soooo, I pulled the motor off the newer unit, took the best parts of the switching mechanisms of each and then cleaned the head and such and it is playing and not smoking the motor.
I have both the Ghia and Bus / Bug face plates for this set up now.
I kept the hulk unit of the old 8 track in that ate tapes for spare parts...
I found the correct sized rubber band that will replace the belts on this unit.
I am stoked to get this going, I have had the core unit for a few years.
Listened to John Denver, Hall and Oats, Marshall Tucker Band, Queen, etc for about an hour last night just to test it out.
Going to run the CD player under dash in a T3 housing, and the 8track in the dash.
Any one have any ideas as to how to wire the speakers into the dual set-up. I can wire into a radio alright, but when it comes to add on components (subs, amps, etc) I am lost...
Thanks, KC

Finally pulled the 1776 from the bug and put it in Bocephus. Gotta get the accelerator cable dialed in though. It's sticky and doesn't return to idle. I think it's something with the accelerator cable bowden tube. Was always sticky with the other engine, but it's even worse with the heavy weber linkage.
Oh well, the hard part is done!

Thanks Bryce. It definitely felt peppier, but I'll have to see how it handles some bigger hills before I decide to keep it or go bigger. The swap was a big pain in the butt since I had to swap over the electric fuel pump stuff as well. But I like the clean look.

Good job on the 8track KC! If I had tried that I would have ended up with two parts units. Can't help on the speakers, never have dealt with anything more than a head unit.

Finally got around to tearing into the truck buddy today!  Tomorrow I will play musical transaxles! I need the transaxle from the buggy to go into Black Betty's original pan so it can stay a roller. The tranny from that pan is good and will be cleaned up and installed in Black Betty's "new" pan so I can make it a roller.

Black Betty's good transaxle pulled out....unknown condition buggy transaxle put back in so the pan can still be a roller.....Now I just need to clean it up and get it put in the pan I was going to put under Pat.
