Got My Bug Home!!

Post by drvr8 on Thu Dec 06, 2012 12:21 am

I got to drive my birthday present home today! Drove from Bremerton to Peachtree City without any problems... then took my wife to dinner and then took my daughter out to look at Christmas lights! What a night!! Gonna try to post pics... bear with me... I'm a rookie!

This is my first dealings with a narrowed beam/lowered bug... so I will be asking lots of questions... looking for help from my ACVW brethren... I have learned a great deal from reading the last umpteen years... but it's now reality time! I can't wait to see/meet/hang out with all of you!

We can't either, always a thrill to have new folks with great enthusiasm. It keeps us long timers from burnout. And I've experienced that before.

Welcome to the madness.

Very cool ride! afro

Looks clean and very solid. I would ditch that fuel filter behind the fuel pump though or at least put some clamps on it.

Great looking car!

Great looking engine. I have to ask for engine pics on every car thread because I'm an engine guy.

x2 on the filter. Remove it or clamp it. Also if you want to be a little safer, you can do this where the fuel line connects to the carb.

Its simple, keeps the fuel line from popping off, and I've heard its a good idea.

Thanks for all the props and for the information... I will be moving the filter before this weekend. My wife did buy me a fire extinguisher... that I really don't ever want to have to use. Again... thanks for the input... and thanks for doing it without being degrading!

Smart lady, protecting her birthday present investment! Definitely a must have in these old cars, hopefully you'll never need it.

That is a good idea. I did notice the fuel line appears to not be German Fuel line. The German cloth style fuel line is designed for the high temperature and Heat Aircooleds Have. I would recommend getting that rubber fuel line replaced with German fuel hoses. Seen that type of fuel hose fail and cause fires. Herrell Bug Parts or Pro Flow carries German fuel hoses.

Just use clamps and don't over tighten them. Fuel injected clamps as nice as they dont dig in. Always keep a check on the lines and inlets and outlets on the carb and fuel pump. Good advice on the wire trick. I change my fuel lines at least once a year as they just deteriorate so fast. So if you know nothing about the lines just change them.

I personally use nothing but rubber lines. Easy to get here locally and easier to tell a leak and general outside condition. All engines get hot so heat on rubber line doesn't bother me. If a rubber line fails due to heat then you should have moved away from the heat source.

Appreciate ALL the advice! Can you get the lines and clamps at NAPA or Autozone or some place like that?

Yeah you can get em at napa or elsewhere.cheaper at pro flow or herrells and technically correct, either works I just prefer the correct fuel hose cause it fits tighter and I have personally had trouble with the rubber stuff not holding up as well as the german hose never had German hose fail so Im just a beleiver in the German parts as long as they are available.
