Here is the final result of all the straighening of the engine bay that I did. It looks a lot more orderly now.

Yesterday I was able to install my new steering gear that I have had for months. Now I know just how worn out my old one was. It feels like I have power steering now compared to the old one. Twisted Evil

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to get any pics of the installation because i had to hurry to get it done to beat the rain home. Rolling Eyes

However, now my steering wheel seems a bit off. It was worse than this after i replaced the box. This is as close as I could get it to straight by taking the wheel off and rotating it.

An alignment shop can adjust the tie rods to straighten out the steering wheel- the car looks nice!

That's what I was thinking. But, it will have to wait until after the holidays so all the crazy stuff can die down.

Just wondering, is this a simple job that one can do?

Sounds good. Might try and get to it this weekend.

I might be a little more capable of working on the car myself now that I have a Bently manual. Twisted Evil

Whoa, it's been a while. Consider this the 1st post in this thread of 2013. alien

Well, not much is going on as far as major progress or any new parts (yet Wink ). Just mainly been driving the car around, enjoying the ride and meeting new people. However, I did find the tin piece that covers the crank pulley in my stockpile of parts in the shed. I don't think it does anything for cooling, but it is a piece that I know came with the car and I haven't seen it on any of the VW's I have seen lately.

No cooling benefit, just a safety feature. Most we're prob tossed with the first belt change. I run one on my 71 just because you don't see em everyday and they just look damn cool. Cool

Alright, after a winter season of planning, here is what i have come up with...

My plan for this year is:
*to get some of the tin that I am missing on my engine
*Buy a set of 5/205 BRM wheels
*Install a set of 2 1/2'' drop spindles (the kit that comes with disk brakes, if possible)
*put in some guages using a dash grill cut for a tach, oil psi, and oil temp
*strip off the fenders, weld the cracks in them, and paint the car
*put in some 3-point seatbelts in the front
*And most of all, enjoy the ride! Very Happy

To give an idea of what I'm going for, here is a photoshopped pic form Fab4fan over on the Samba:

Thanks for looking. cheers

Re: Jon65's 65

Post by Jon65 on Thu Apr 11, 2013 9:40 pm

Well, with the storms being predicted to have hail, my parents wanted to pull the bug out of the garage and pull the "new" VW inside to keep it from getting any dents. The reasoning behind this is that my car will be painted soon and it already has its fair share of dents in it already. Laughing

So we settled on a compromise. (Don't let the angle of the pic fool you, there wasn't a whole bunch of space between the two vehicles and the walls. pale

Tommorow, I will have to pull the car out and take a look at the electrical. Because as I was rearranging the cars, whenever I applied the brakes, the radio went out (lost power) and the brakes lights wouldn't come on. The lighting up of the brake warning light in the speedo whenever I hit the brakes told me that my brake lights didn't come on. I have a couple ideas of what it could be, but it will have to wait til I get home tomorrow because it got dark on me tonight.

Definitly got to keep it safe from hail! What kind of speedo do you have that has a brake warning light?

It's the stock 90 mph speedo. By brake warning light, I meant the turn signal light in the center. Whenever I hit the brakes, it would light up and would stay lit while I held the brake pedal down and my brake lights would not come on.

Well, I went out there to see if I could find the problem with the electrical that was causing my turn signal light to light up. I at first thought that the battery may have run down for some reason. So, I started it up to let the gen charge up the batt. Right after it started up, I tried pressing the brake pedal and everything worked as it should. I think it may have been a loose wire that lost contact with it's connector.

Got it out for a long drive this evening to see how well the winter adjustments have been. I drove all over Hampton and in some of Mcdonough, and also had the chance to cruise along with several bicycle groups. I kinda enjoyed the way it drove and how it handled. I think it's about ready for some summer cruising. Very Happy
