Here is after I drilled the welds that held the hinge on.......

Then a I cut out the rust and made a template out of an index card

I had some metal that was holding Black Bettys floor pan together so I cut out the patch but it was just too thick. So plan "B" I got a piece of the rusted out floor pan from Black Betty and found a little usuable piece and cut the patch out

Here is the patch held in with a magnet. Still needs a little trimming but getting there..... After this point I got lazy and went inside. More to come soon!

Which side is that? I know one of the bolt holes on the pass side is stripped and that's why I quit working on that lid.

Its the drivers side. It was the reason the decklid kept popping out when you shut it

I will have to check the other hinge before I put it back on

Fixed the drivers side hinge and put a little paint on it until I can get around to finishing the vents...

Finished painting the front apron and put the horn grills back in something I should have done in November... Also drilled the bumper for the single wheel trailer mounts! Getting closer to being ready for Reynolds!

The wheel is backwards because I had just backed up to see how the trailer does backing up....

Re: Jade 62 Beetle

Post by Attorney Isaiah Loophole on Wed May 12, 2010 8:35 pm

Well I got tired of struggling trying to put the engine back in this car so I decided to make a removable apron on it.

First I started by removing the bumper and fenders. Then went ahead and removed the engine seal from the apron. Then I started in on cutting all the spot welds.... Shocked

and more......

Success! I did not get pictures of the spot welds on the inside of the engine compartment and two cuts I had to make

I did cut the wings off of the apron that attached inside the engine compartment after I fully removed the apron. While I was at it I went ahead and removed the rust bandit (c channel that holds the decklid seal)

Lots of work left to do to make it more functional.....maybe a little mighty puddy Wink

I was going to make a removable rear apron once... my first beetle had been hit in the rear and it was pinched at the back of the quarter panels... the rear apron was also all mangled and full of bondo... I cut the rear apron off without trying to save it... had to cut through a quarter inch of bondo.... I never got around to putting another apron back on. for a while i didn't have a decklid either... someone could have just stolen my engine Shocked man was it easy to remove and reinstall after that!
