1970 Bay Window "Moto"

Post by rpm750 on Wed Dec 21, 2011 10:39 pm

Cleaning the Bus out I found this down in the drivers seat support area.
An Arch Alphanumeric Pager made by Motorola.

So I guess the bus will be called Moto. Short for Motorola. And when we go camping in Moto we can say that we will be staying in the MotoHome. Yeah far fetched but what the hell.

Here are some pics of it's condition.....

Front floor....

Behind front seats...

Cargo Area...

Well enough for now this thing is way way nicer than the '71.
More later.

Plan is to have it ready for Reynolds. I'm going to try hard to make that date. Couple hours each night.

It looks like it is in pretty good shape. Little rust repair here and there and some metal shaping and you'll have it done in no time. Just don't get burned out again.

Dang, I've been looking all over for that. Must have came unclipped from my belt when I was helping you unload all the parts. I've felt so lost without it (and probably missed like 100 pages).

Yeah, small one. LOL. Doesn't look like the metal or panels were damaged. That's going to be the biggest job sand blasting all that area. The PO located replacement lights, Eng Lid. I'll have to rewire that area but not a big deal.

I did repair the Drivers wheel opening last night.

Before....

After...
Needs more hammering and some welding but it's a start.

Worked on the Bus some today. Started with one of the most dreaded parts, Sand Blasting the engine compartment.

Before.....

After.....

What a pain in the butt, borrowed a blaster from Eric and I'm glad I didn't spend the money for one it doesn't work like I thought. When it's shooting out sand correctly it is great but most of my time was cleaning up sand, sifting and adjusting the blaster. So I got half of it cleaned hope I can get the other half done tomorrow. Still need to remove the breather bracket.

I'm using a recycled glass product. It reduces quickly, powder after a few sprays.

Eric it worked ok, I need to figure out the adjustments more. When it spits at the first man I think half the media is blown out. Once I get it going it does a great job. I don't think I'll buy one though. I used the other one you let me borrow, nice b/c you can get in some tight places. Tried mine and it still surges and is slow as hell.

haha, yeah the big pot one does kinda pour a ton of sand out right at first, but works good after that. I really like the small hand held one though. I've been using it alot more lately than the big one. Just have to refill it often.

Worked on the Bus today. This sandblasting is for the birds.

But I got most of this area finished....

Also got the headliner out and the pad/soundproofing that was under it....

Cleaned all the residual headliner material from the post and removed the pads around the walk-thru portion of the cab.

Then I cleaned/vacuumed the shop as best as possible for now. Oh yeah and the inside of the Bus. I'm real tired. Back to the grind Tuesday. Still have to do the area just over the trans, torsion housing and frame in that area also. Tight and it has under coating on it, it doesn't come off easy, even with a blaster in your hand!

No sandblasting tonight so I took the dash out and got all the wiring out. Wiring harness is literally toast in the back from the fire. I'm changing the color and I like painting it as if it came from the factory that way. Lots of sanding on the inside and it will all have to be done by hand. Very clean paint behind the dash and that Styrofoam insulation.

Keeping stock drums for now. All new parts on the '70 and I don't want to spend the money right now for the parts for the 5x112 brakes. I'll swap over some time later.
2012 is the year of the Bus!

Ok the other day I had posted about how stripped the Bus is so here is a pic.....

Today I worked on different stuff. The org owner started drilling holes I guess to replace the dog leg but it doesn't need to be replaced just patched.

Little rusty on my welding.

I would like to suggest this Welding Helmet. It's an Auto Darkening from Northern Tool, yeah I thought the same thing but it works perfect. I think it was on sale for $49.95. Love it.

And here is the finished welding with the welds ground down.

One other thing was the rear hatch hinge on the passenger side. Looks like it was allowed to fly up time after time and it damaged the hinge.

This was a hair raising process but it's done and I'm so happy that it is. I was worried about this job. But here is the new hinge from the '71 parts Bus.

I hadn't shown a shot of the nose so this is it....

And this is the Windshield tray......

I started removing this silver stuff and some rust is under it so it is all coming off. I don't want to repaint later so I'll do it right the first time.
