I've had a couple of people ask about the extra rear apron that came with the bus. Unfortunately, only one is in good shape. The good one is an extra one the guy I bought the bus from had bought to replace the one that was on the bus when he got it. That one had been cut to run a beetle exhaust. Unfortunately, the bumper was also cut, so I'll have to replace it eventually. I've already got my extra motor set up with a beetle exhaust so for the time being, I'll probably just run the hacked apron/bumper combo and look like a fool Laughing until I start trying to get it looking decent.

Here's how it looked when they guy I bought it from got it.

In the excitement of getting the bus loaded up and heading out, we inadvertently left a box behind. Mike shipped it to us for free and we got it today. This box had new front and rear window rubbers, two new brake hoses, left and right battery tray replacements (old ones are already cut out), sunvisors and a few frame pieces to replace the dented ones (but I probably won't mess with those anytime soon, they aren't to bad.)

Definitely lucky, this guy was an awesome seller! Knew we were making a nearly 5 hour drive, so he sent me over 100 pictures before we left so there would be no surprises. I offered to pay a few times for the shipping of the box, and he just wouldn't let me.

Good to see that there are still good people in the hobby. I have loaned out parts to help others get their car on the road with the understanding that I would get the part, or an equal replacement back later. Sad to say I am still waiting for some of these parts......... Rolling Eyes

Re: 66 Camper Bus "Bocephus"

Post by fluxcap on Tue Dec 06, 2011 7:46 pm

Brought my windows over to my house so I could work on them a little here and there.

Somewhere down the line, the frames had been painted to match the bus (see pic on page 1). Most other buses with these windows I've seen have unpainted frames, and that's the look I like. I needed to take all these apart anyways to get the horrible purple tint of the glass.

Before - 4 windows that came with the bus, and the fifth one is the one my hero Glenn found for me at Bulli. That window is made for campers that were converted from window buses and was made to go in the existing window recess. It's a little different than the other 4 windows. Luckily, I still have the inner frame and hinge from the original 5th window (the glass and outer frame flew off while the previous owner was driving one day Shocked ). So between the pieces I have left and the window Glenn found, I can make it all work!

Old tint job is bubbling up like crazy.

Sorry, no "during" photos since my hands were filthy. I removed the inner frames and took the glass out of each window and removed all the tint and the glass all nice and clean. Then used aircraft stripper to get the paint off the outer frames. Then used some 0000 steel wool doused in lacquer thinner to get what remained off the paint off and take care of some light scratches. Then shined them up with some aluminum polish stuff.

Came out pretty good. Not show quality by any means, (some of the frames had a few small dents and light pitting) but I'm very happy with the result. Haven't put the glass back in yet, as I'm waiting on the glass to frame seals to get here.

Post by fluxcap on Wed Dec 07, 2011 4:40 am

Thanks guys. My fingers are still sore! I think the camera flash is helping with the shine some. I just like this look better than the painted frame look.

The plan is to but the bus back to one solid color, thinking it will be Agave green. Not a bus color, but I've loved it ever since seeing Michael C's old oval.

And Pete, no, not really a big Hank Jr. fan, but there's an old SNL clip with Chris Farley doing an impression of Jr., and he keeps saying "please, call me Bocephus". Always liked that skit, and the way he kept saying that line.

This is the color from the Samba......Agave Green
May I suggest adding a Cream color to the roof down to the belt line that would be sweet! Awesome find Eric.

Paint is a WAYS off for this one, so it could always change by then, but for now, the plan is just one plain color. Already got one two-toned vw Laughing .

If you're off for any reason on Friday Bob, give me a call and stop by to check it out.

Will do, I usually roll in the drive around 3:45 so I could just roll on over if you're going to be there. Like to see it, might motivate me to get up and do something these days.

Re: 66 Camper Bus "Bocephus"

Wow, I'm beat. Fun day of working on the bus. Got my flipped spindles installed. Thanks again to Bryce for flipping them for me. I also reamed the tierod holes so I could flip my tierods on the spindle end. Cleaned up and painted my backing plates, and then installed all new front brake components. Re-doing front brakes on a bus is a pain in the arse!!! I'm replacing all the lines (rubber and metal) and that short metal line that runs between the two wheel cylinders was nuts trying to get bent into shape. Then I invented about 10 new dirty words while trying to get the actual shoes into place. In the end, it all went together, and now I know how to do it in half the time next time.

Flipped spindle installed

New front wheel cylinders, shoes and lines installed

Now sitting a good bit lower up front. Need to tackle the rear end in the next couple of weeks. Also need to do an alignment job, not sure if it's from flipping the tierods, but the alignment is super out of whack |\ . Laughing Or it may have just been out of alignment before I got it and I just never noticed it.

Thanks! It was a tedious job, but just cause I had never done it before. Once you know what you're doing it's really not too bad at all. Called Bob, and got him to stop by to give me a hand with the stupid brake shoes, but I had them figured out before he arrived. He helped me get the wheels back on and lower it off the jackstands. I think I may be ok with the tires that are on it. We turned the wheels to full lock and then Bob got in and jumped around to get the suspension moving and it seems like there should be enough tire clearance.

Of course! My torsion arm offset was right in the middle of the chart, so I didn't have to go over 4 shims on the outside of the upper linkpins, so the clearance was perfect.
