66 Camper Bus "Bocephus"

Post by fluxcap on Sun Nov 06, 2011 3:02 pm

Just got this yesterday and we are super excited. It's a 66 walk-through, and I believe it's a Caravelle or Sundial camper conversion, similar to a westy conversion but different windows (still new to me, but that's what I've picked up from the samba).

It's in pretty good shape overall. Already had a funky green front floor welded in and new funky green rockers on both sides. Cargo floor and floor above the engine are super solid. Frame is in good shape too. A few dings/dents in a couple of frame pieces, but no rot (well not much rot). Drivers side dogleg, passenger door, and the lower outer drivers side of the nose all have small patches of rot, but other than that it's mostly just surface rust.

All the small bits (lights, door mechs, gauges, etc...) are all in boxes. Also came with a few boxes of new seals and misc. parts.
Old crumbling interior was included in the sale, but it's only good for patterns. Also came with the original bed, and a 68 westy bed. Going to go through and install all new brake components (when I get more money in the play fund), put the 1600 sp in it and get it on the road, then work on the rusty spots.

.

.
Here's how it looked before the previous owner tore it down.

It will get a mild drop. Paint is a long way away, but it will probably one day be some hue of blue (maybe dove) or one of the old greens.

Congrats...nice find! One thing I've noticed about type 2's is that the parts cost a lot more ( and are harder to find) than type 1's!!

Thanks everybody. I'll try and get more pictures once I get everything unloaded out of it. We can't wait to get started on it.

Re: 66 Camper Bus "Bocephus"

Post by fluxcap on Thu Nov 10, 2011 7:46 pm

Spent a good bit of time today clearing out some space in my work area and unloading the bus.
This is after I had already unloaded a good bit of stuff out of it.

Here's the "old" seat/bed that came with the bus. Never seen one like it before so I'm not sure if it's original or just something somebody made.
.

Jump seat

Bumpers, two rear aprons, parcel shelf

Started laying out all the old wood to see what I had. Definitely only good for templates, but looks like I have everything. Here's a few pieces.
.
.

Finally made it to the boxes of parts.

Guy I bought it from said he had bagged and tagged everything he removed, and he wasn't kidding.

Funky green metal and random other pieces. We forgot a box when loading everything up, but the seller is shipping it to me. It'll have the left and right battery tray pieces and some other metal pieces.

Front of this door is great, just the rear bottom got a little rusty, but I got the fix for it!

All new window cranks and seals

Green floor

Z-bed and jumpseat

Couldn't get it to lay all the way flat, but I only fiddled with it for a minute or two. Probably just needs a little "persuasion".

Naptime

.

You should have brought me those spindles over so I could of had them done by the time you got back from vacation....Might as well go ahead and flip them when you go to do the brakes. If you are keeping the reduction boxes you could always drop it a click until later plans....

yeah, it'll be a little bit before I order all the brake stuff. We got plenty of time. I need to give the transmission a good cleaning and lookover. Noticed it had dripped a good bit on the basement floor, so I need to see where it's coming from. I'm keeping the RGBs for now, so that is the route I'll go. Eventually I'll try to track down a 68 transmission for it, but that will be a ways off.

Just keep on looking and you'll find one too. We've been looking for a while now and passed on quite a few, finally found what we believe is the one.
