8 pass oil cooler help

Post by 72superbeetle on Wed May 11, 2011 9:35 pm

How much extra oil should you add for 8 pass empi oil cooler and when you change oil do you need to flush oil from cooler or does it all settle in the case for draining?

If you've got the 8 pass oil cooler mounted higher than the oil sump, it seems like it would just drain back into the engine. It would be easy to drain the block, then pull the lowest oil line off of the 8 pass and see if any oil came out.

You wouldn't want to change the oil and leave dirty oil in the cooler, but I guess it depends how it's mounted. The lines could be up, down, or somewhat level

it is mounted on back of dog house so theoreticlly oil all drains down but who has this setup and knows how much more oil capacity and does it need to be flushed to get all the oil out of cooler,

Is it right over the opening of the generator fan?

#1. Check your oil with a dipstick. Nobody can predict how much oil you need- too many variables (hose size and length).
#2. Put the cooler anywhere else. That location just preheats the cooling air your engine is depending on. It's comparable to pouring boiling water in your cooler full of ice cold beverages. Please don't be offended- I'm looking out for your car study

That's also why I asked, the oil cooler heats up, then the fan pulls hot air through it and pumps it over the top of the cylinder heads. We're just looking out for you :-)

But it cools the oil which in turn keeps motor running cooler the air blowing over the oil cooler is not getting hot enuff to change the air temp blowing over cylinder heads, I have checked my dipstick but it varies if my car has been runnin or sittin dependant upon oil sitting in oil cooler or case.

Park it on level ground, wait a few minutes after you shut it off, thencheck your Dipstick.

Really, cause I'm thinking if I have an external oil cooler with extra oil the dip stick will be fairly irrelevent.

why did you ask for help if you already know everything?? you have had two different people offer help/ suggestions, yet you don't want to hear what they have to say??? over it.....

But the two people who helped had no info for me, and I don't know everything that's why I asked. Somebody who has had experience with an external oil cooler would know, do you know? If you had asked my original question do you feel it had been answered.

I think the how much oil you need has been answered....follow clydes advice and add until the dipstick reads full....maybe start with 2.75 quarts of oil let it run then turn it off and let it sit then check the dipstick add as needed....keep up with how much it takes to fill it and then you will know for now on....how do you expect to know if you are low on oil if the dipstick is fairly irrelevant?

and as far as changing oil I would do that as normal...I wouldn't worry about flushing it....it should drain back for the most part....if you are worried about it put an actual oil filter on....you should clean your oil screen every oil change any way and for me that is every 1000-1500 miles

i would move the external oil cooler if I was you.......you are just adding heat to what cools your engine.....that is why vw changed to a dog house cooler instead of the one inside the fan shroud directly in the path of number 3 hence the problems with that cylinder.....your engine is not cooled with oil it is lubricated with it....air cools your engine and so keep it as cool as possible

yeah I know it's air cooled smart ass, and thanks to everyone who attempted to assist my dumb ass who doesn't know how to check a dip stick or add oil to a car, I'm just a f*$#@% disabled Army veteran who asked a damn question in hopes that someone with experience with an external oil cooler would have answered it instead of speculators, actual experience goes a long way I appreciate those who attempted to assist me and vwtattooed you had no advice just trying to antagonize somebody.
