What is it about #3?
That's the same one I broke a rocker arm on and all the sites I read about adjusting valves said that #3 gets loose first.

It's the cylinder that runs the hottest and therefore tends to have the most problems.

It's usually the first one to give up part of a valve and begin the destruction cycle (and like Hobug noted, runs the hottest)

Ok, but why does it run the hottest? Furthest from the fan? closest to the tranny? just wondering if there was a relatively easy way to fix it, different fan shroud etc.

You could always look for the elusive odd lobed distributor. It supposedly cures the #3 heat problem.

On a type 1, the oil cooler sticks up right by it, so when it heats up, the 3rd cylinder heats up. VW supposedly corrected that with the doghouse shroud, their best improvement to date

was that piston even from a pre 71 motor with internal oil cooler, or did it have a doghouse shroud/ offset oil cooler?
