Was at the flea market this morning and one of the vendors had a '74 std. beetle. I asked to see the engine and he said (as I opened the hood) "every thing in there is original."
He was mostly true the fuel lines were 1 million years old and just for kicks he had 2 old as dirt fuel filters (these things were bronze colored).

I explaned to him that he needed to change out all the fuel lines and he litterally ROLLED HIS EYES AT ME!!!

I the told him that the vendor 2 stalls down had a large fire extinguisher for sale and he needed to go down and get it.

I am sure he didn't get it, because he didn't get it....

Ignorance is bliss till you see smoke comming out of your engine cover.

...and, when you do change the lines, clamps are cheap insurance.

I like to always put a little pinch of mighty putty on my lines before I connect them! Laughing

Peter, KC and Jerome warned me about this fate when I was putting Pippi back on the road. Every time I see a photo like this or the one on Google street view it reminds me that it was money well spent.

Oh and I also mounted a fire extinguisher right behind the driver's seat.

Every year for Christmas/b-day when asked what I want its always fire extinguishers and 1156/1157 bulbs.

And I usually carry 3 in my bus. Unless you know the proper way to use them they can be a waste of time, so google some vids and learn how to. They do not last long and with an engine fire the fire will generally flame back up, so its good to have at least one extra. And flip for a bigger one, the little $15 ones will barely put out a ciggarette!

A few more notes, as Grifspop mentioned make it easy to get to, may look good mounted in the engine compartment but......Think about that one!

And they do not last forever. When you change your oil or do maintanence flip the extinguisher upside down and give it a few whacks with a rubber mallet on the bottom.
