Re: What did you do to your volkswagen today?

Post by Bugman114 on Tue Oct 26, 2010 9:36 pm

I have always gravity blead them. just crack open the bleeders, and let them dribble out. once there is no bubbles, tighten them back up. and to adjust, i like to adjust the first shoe till it stops the drum, then loosen till it drags a LITTLE bit, then do the same for the second one, and all the rest. this has never failed for me. i usually bleed them first, then adjust.

Also, this may not be nessesary, but when i bleed them, i always like to jack the front end of the car up, bleed them all, let the car down, and jack up the rear of the car up as well, and bleed them again. It just seems like if the car isn't perfectly level, air bubles could possibly get caught against the piston in the wheel cylinder. think of it like a carpenters level:

If the car isn't perfectly level, air will be on one side of the cylinder, and since the bleeder is in the center of the wheel cylinder, it won't "catch" the air bubble.

I don't know if a tiny air bubble like that would be enough to make the breaks not work right, or i'm just way too paranoid, but almost everytime i do this, the second time i bleed, i usually get another small bubble fart out of the bleeder.

i will try adjusting shoes all the way out and bleeding then back off the shoes. i have no bubbles, a steady stream of fluid, but NO pressure! it just runs out instead of squirting out. EVERYTHING has been replaced and is new on the brake system. this is the last thing i need to get done for my wife to drive this car!!!!uuuuggghhhh!

perhaps try bleeding at the master cylinder as well. just crack open the lines till fluid comes out. If it isn't shooting out, sounds like M/C issue. What type of mastercylinder did you buy? I went thru three straight bad M/C's on my 74 super (approx 3-4 years ago), none of them worked at all, no pressure. It wasn't till i said "F@CK IT", and paid $80 for a brand new german M/C. And it has then worked. At work, every time i've ever sold a mastercylinder for a VW (IIRC about 3 or 4 times), weather it was new or remanufactured, They always brought it back the next day, because it didn't work. they went to NAPA and spent that $100 (it went from $80 to $100 last i heard), and they've had no problems. good luck bro, i know how friggin annoying brake problems can be. sometimes makes you want to light a match to the whole damn car Laughing

Did you replace the flexible brake lines going to the wheel cylinders? Sometimes those swell up and don't let much fluid pass, but they look O.K. from the outside. The inside just gets smaller.

Ordered new adjustable struts, inserts, disk brake conversion, over sized sway bar & bushing, front rebuild kit, new idler arm bushing.... ouch.
Still need to order the flip kit for the bump steer and a few other items, but the RHD 1302 is going to ROCK (with the 1300 DP...LOL)
...
Paint is going on immediately after I get this in and convert back to vent windows from the '70 parts car I have...

Well started the carpet for Geek. Sound proofing and all. Ordered the seals for my Sunroof and some other odds and ends from WW.

I'm putting together a "How To" post on carpet from scratch! Look for it soon.

Had 250 miles of bonding time with it! Woke up and saw the forecast was for a great day so we decided to go to Providence Canyon State Park.

On the way there, I finally hit all 5 digits on the odometer.
Turning 10,000 miles

Park was super cool. Had a small section where people had lived and abandoned some cars.

Kinda far out (about 40 miles from Columbus), but well worth the trip if you like scenery.

Stopped in Columbus for burgers on the way home!
