it could be wore out and bearing clearance can cause a oil pressure drop but first thing first put a manual gauge were the oil sender goes an see what kind of pressure you got and that might just show you it is your sender wire cause you said there was a fire a while back i hope this helps you but a bad wire can cause the light to come on randomly good luck an dont lose faith in your little car

to fully determine what the problem is...if any...is to install an oil pressure gauge. do not rely on an old light. once you can see if pressure is changing you can better diagnose the problem. i ran 20-50 oil in my 1776 year round with no problems. if you have any blockages, restrictions or too close bearing tolerances, oil will not flow properly. get a gauge installed and go from there...

Re: Starting to get a little fedd up

I drive my bus every single day 17 miles each way to work. For the last 13 years (with a small break of about two) I've used a VW as a daily driver. A couple of years I used my bug to deliver pizzas as well and was the only driver who never called in because my car was broke. During all that time, I've only been stranded twice. Once when the RGBs let go in the bus and another when the fuel pump died. I have always used 20-50 in my cars because I work around the aviation community and that's what they use in planes (also aircooled engines). You if you intend on using the car as a daily need to do a true rebuild of your engine (not just replace seals). Old VWs can be daily drivers. They're just old and need more attention than new cars.

As to your oil light issue, I would check the wiring and make sure it's not grounding out, replace the oil sender, and check you oil relief plungers to make sure they're not frozen up.

Ok thank you guys for your advice on the oil. It was the sending unit. But now I pulled into the truett's and pulling into a space it stalled out cause I pushed the clutch pedal in and there was no clutch.

Cable still intact at tranny then pushed the pedal with hand with barely any pressure and piiinnnngggg. So I'm assuming that the cable broke at the pedal. Cause the pedal is free now. Soo it's gonna be a late night. Gonna go pick him up in about an hour

its the little things like this that really sucks. but think of it this way, once you get it taken care of, it won't give you any problems for a long time.

Be sure to clean out the clutch cable tube with brake cleaner, or a cleaner of your choice, and grease the hell out of it. I took a grease gun, and shoved a shit load of grease down the tube. then greased the cable as i installed it. wasn't hard. cable is nice and smoothe now. i got a feeling my clutch cable is on the verge of breaking, as it feels like the cable is clicking, and not smoothe. I'll be replacing it as soon as i get some free time, and after i finish installing all of the heater stuff, lol.

The hook for the clutch cable, on the pedal assembly can break with age too. There is a wear point on the hook that becomes weak, causing the hook to bend, and the cable slips off. I've never broken a cable, but several hooks have broken on me through the years. If thats the case, you can replace the pedal assembly, of get a replacement hook. (I think EMPI makes a heavy duty replacement hook).

call jason or chuck at IAS. I'm sure they'll have the whole assembly, or maybe just the hook. i think i remember seeing just the hook there, but i'm not 100%. they open from 9-6 tuesday thru friday, and 10-2 on saturday. While you are in there, either replace, or re-grease the cable. i think IAS also has the cable instock. they are pretty cheap, so i'd just replace it. Just run a can or two of brake cleaner thru the tube ( i shoved a bunch of rags in the tunnel side of the tube to catch the crap, and sprayed the brake cleaner from the transmission side of the tube. there was a LOT of crap in that tube), and grease the hell out of the new cable. ya sure don't want to have to mess with that cable if it breaks, lol.
