FIRE FIRE FIRE

Post by PeeWeeMan91 on Sat Jul 03, 2010 6:37 pm

Got in the bug this afternoon and was gonna go wash it for the 4th and got to the stop sign about a half a mile from my house and i noticed my tach dropping rmp's real low so i put it in first and it was sputtering too. no more than two feet i looked in the rearview mirror and i see orange flames. OH SHIT sorry language but thats the exact words. i didnt have an extinguisher so i was screwed and couldnt find someones hose i could barrow. so lucky i called my dad and he brought an extinguisher. but anyways the fuel line to the float tub blew off and sprayed gas every where and some how it caught. so i have 4 weeks and six days to re paint the rear end and fix the wiring till the drag night and y u buggin. can i get it done?

Ouch, sorry to hear about that! Wiring should be an easy fix, and once that is done it will be driveable again. Paint can come when you have the time or money to get to it. After my accident I got it road worthy and drove it for about 10 months before I ever got around to getting it repainted. Bring it to the show either way, it ain't got to be pretty!

Sorry about the fire, definitely get an extinguisher though, they are a mandatory item to keep in a VW.

they have small fire extinguishers at advance auto. i think they cost $17. I always keep one in my bug. ITs amazing how many people don't believe me when i tell them to take the friggin fuel filter out from between the fuel pump, and carb, to prevent just this. Its also a VERY GOOD idea to do this:

Just some safety wire, tied to keep the fuel line from popping off. Oh, and any pics of tha carnage?

I like to put the filter before the pump, to protect the pump from damage. As many years as I've been in the Vdub scene, I have never had that happen to me. Knock on wood...I'm sorry you had to suffer through that.

u have 2 post it on a photo site, like photobucket. then paste the URL (ex. www.photobucket.com/your_album/Your_pic.jpeg) of the pic, and place [img][/img] around it. (put the URL of the pic in the middle of those two tags.

I've always thought about making some sort of fire supression system using a jug of water, some nozzles, and a pressurized tank of air. maybe even a paint ball gun tank. Doesn't seems like such a bad idea now, after seeing that, lol. i hope ya get it fixed soon. Let me know if ya need a hand with anything. I don't live to far away. good luck bro

yeah. wiring can be a PITA, but its not too hard. from the pics, it doesn't look like there was too much damage. Now would be the perfect time to make sure you got a hoover bit on that oil cooler Wink . those little bastards are hard to find, lol Laughing

its the little tin piece that wraps around the oil cooler heres some pics from when i was rebuilding my 2074cc:

This is the hoover bit installed:

A pic of it by itself:

And a pic of another one next to the installed bit:

these hoover bits (named after bob hoover), seal off the oil cooler to the fan shroud, with out that tiny bit, you loose a lot of cooling to the oil cooler. Its just another one of those tin pieces that everyone seems to throw away. Laughing

oook?

They put that tin there for a reason, lol. I've never had one of those pulley nut coveres. I think thats more of an asthetic piece then anything, but not 100% sure. With out the hoover bit, you loose a lot of cooling to the oil cooler. It just seals off the oil cooler to the fan shroud.

Thats cool. i mean your not gonna blow up or anything by not having it, Its just one of those small improvement things. sorta like that venturi ring they sell for the fanshroud. Not 100% nessecary, just helps a bit with cooling.
