Fog light brackets for under $10 and only 30 minutes of your time

Post by atye on Fri Mar 19, 2010 11:24 am

I work for a lighting company... I have some lights laying around in boxes... I want to add some to my classic VW...

BUT... I don't wanna shell out the $$ for a set of fancy chrome brackets that no one will ever notice.

So, I go to the hardware store and pick up two of these:

and a flat piece of steel that is basically the same item, just without the bend.

I cut the flat piece in half (one for each side) and that piece, along with one of the L-brackets, makes a nice fog light bracket that requires no drilling of the car. It basically tightens on both sides of the front bumper bracket and makes a very sturdy mount.

These are not the final lights that I plan to use, but you see the general idea. Once the light is in the right spot, you can trim the excess off of the L-bracket, grind some nice, round corners, paint it (or leave it silver), and you are done!

Total price was around $8 and total time was around 30 minutes.

This was a test-fitting only, I will post more finalized pics when I have the corners rounded and the correct lengths and all.

Atye,
I had the same thoughts for the foglights on ASBug, I went to a shop that installs tonneau covers on pickups and they gave me some of the "little" mounts that the covers come with, I took these parts and used a 3.5" stainless carrage bolt to thread it through the V in the front bumper bracketts.
I know that the earlier models bracket is different, but I believe you could trim the excess off these aluminum brackets for mounting just to the outboard side of the bracket. (sort of like the second photo.) This is what I plan on doing to Betty when I get the bumper mounted... With the use of these aluminum clamps and the stainless bolts, you shouldn't have to worry about rust, and the aluminum can be polished.

(Yes, I did change the wires on the lights to be yellow and brown to match the rest of the wireing....)

Just a thought, I've had mine on for 2 years now and love them, the new hellas do not get hot enough to melt the covers. I never take them off. Even with the covers on, I can see well enough to drive at night! I cannot imagine how bright they would be without the covers....

Ok,after three days of trying to solve my bouncing for light problem I got it done. Thanks forthat heads up. And it cost me less than $6.50 but a lot of labor but worth it.
