Re: 61 bug (Bertha)

Post by drewBAKER on Sun Dec 12, 2010 1:49 pm

well the other night i was driving home from school and she just quit running. so i got out, adjusted the timing a little and the carb, cranked her back up and dragged a 1/4 mile and it did the same thing. i made it within 5 miles from my house and dad had to come tow me home.

we figured out that the heat risers were completely clogged. we cleaned them out and now she runs a little better. not great but better.

when my dad went to drive it last night around the subdivision the clutch cable snapped. Mad but luckily we had a new one. so we are gettin that done today.

make sure you are getting heat to the carb, via the stove pipe. when i was runnin my stock 1600, i plugged off the the inlet of the air cleaner with a thick piece of foam, and then wired the heatriser opening open, so the carb would get nothing but hot air.

Another time, i took a small K&n filter, stuck in on the end of a fresh air hose, clamped the other end of the hose on the carb, and put the filter under the motor between the pushrod tubes, and ski slopes. basically the same way the stove pipe works. so the carb was collecting nothing but hot air from the filter under the motor. worked extremely well. ran great in 20 degree weather Wink . if you go this route, use the black fresh air tubes. the metal ones will tear up easily, the black ones have paper on the inside and outside, so they are much thicker and last a long time.

that's what happened. the heat risers on the intake were stopped up. so the intake was freezing. now its working better. but we found out that it wasn't the clutch cable that broke. the throw out bearing arm broke. which caused the bearing to pop off.

Apparently, when Drew and Callahan stuck the tranny back in they didn't get the bowden tube back in place. So when I was putting it in place, I got my finger stuck between it and the bracket. Dang that hurt. Well we got it straightened back out welded it back together and put the engine baclk in and drove it. Seems to be working ok for now. (with the emphasis on "for now")

yea we hope. i really just need a new clutch kit. that would help tremendously. when i drove it tonight, the clutch was really loose. it may be the cable. but i think a new kit would help out a lot.
