Holy Smokes....

Post by Treehive on Sun Aug 17, 2008 5:33 pm

Took the clan for a scenic drive on GA 384 (Richard B Russel Scenic Highway) and after a long ascent up the mountain, my brakes started smoking on the way down the mountain....first we noticed a strange smell and when I finally pulled of the road, there was smoke coming from all four wheels Shocked .....primarily the front wheels. Thoughts? Suggestions? The brake system of the Hive is one that I have not delved into too deeply yet, so someone please tell me I'm not f***ed. I can handle the oil leak, but not being able to take a Westy to the Mnts for some camping is bordering on rediculous. Thanks.

When we take the squareback out in the mnts i try not to use the brakes as much as possible, let the engine slow you down even if you have to go a little slower.

Allways use lower gear when coming down a steep grade in the mountains.

Have you seen the run-a- way ramps for big trucks. Durned up breaks from riding them.

Yeah, what they have all said. Your brake are probably fine, you just need to use your gears to slow you down. Lower gears and slower speeds on the down hill are the answer. Cool

Ok....I was just coasting down the mountain riding the brakes, but I had no idea that would cause a problem. I'll just cruise down in 1st and 2nd next time. Thanks sunny
