Last week I bought all of my car tags so I went ahead and tagged and insured this car.  I also already had a year of make plate that I picked up a few years ago so I registered it while I was there.  I also found a front bumper for the car.  Thanks Tony!  Tony took it off his car because it was a little rusty but it is very straight!   I picked up a set of brackets at bugeyed and all the bolts to mount the bumper at lowes today.

Looks good. Some impact strips would really make it now.

Wow...I didn't realize how much they were....some black tape for now will do..lol I used to have an extra one. I will look and see if I still have it. It was from a 71 but I think the bumpers were the same.

What I find interesting is that there seems to be more original early bumpers still out there than late model originals. I have yet to find a late model with its original bumpers. They are usually thin rusty Brazilian ones. And the new triple chrome bumpers are almost as much as early models.

Yeah they are tough to find. I was surprised that the aftermarket brackets fit really nice though.

Re: 1968 Beetle

I finally got my ugly 5.5" sprint stars stripped to bare metal.  I started sandblasting them last week but the paint was thick.  So then I tried some stripper and made a big mess and didnt really get anywhere.  Today I just sucked it and spent them time sandblasting them.  It was a big improvement just to get them to bare metal.   Before the storm came in today, I got them primed and painted black.  I usually spray the gray/aluminum color first then tape and spray the black but I figured I would try it the other way this time.  I have to let them dry for a day or two to tape and spray the aluminum since I just rattle canned them.  I hope to have them on the car for the cruise-in Friday.  Eventually I plan to have them powder coated so that was my reason to opt for the rattle can.

You are on the ball. I assume you are getting it ready for Y U Buggin. Unfortunately our company picnic is tomorrow so I will miss it again. You have done a ton of work already and I haven't even started on the bus.

Yes and no.....I plan to take it tonight for the cruise in but not sure about tomorrow. The reason I have gotten so much done is I work on cars from the house so in down times or frustrated times I work on my own stuff.

Re: 1968 Beetle

I have put maybe 50 miles on the car and have ran into a couple issues....It runs quite hot and grinds going into both 3rd and 4th.  I have adjusted the clutch cable and the shift plate and it hasnt gotten any better.  The shifter feels tight and has a nice pattern.....I am going to drain and refill the tranny and see if that might help.... As far as the heat I am working on cleaning up a vacuum only distributor because the 009 doesnt act right and is possibly the issue.

Yeah I am happy with how it looks.  The pictures do make the car look better than it is though....  The pop outs really cleaned things up by losing those purple tinted windows.

vw57drvr wrote:My bets are on that 009 also. I hate those things. unfortunately it is getting difficult to find a good used one.

Yeah this 009 is just my spare emergency one that I put on just to get the car up and running.

Dake wrote:Man those wheels look great on the car. Great job

Yeah I think they turned out pretty good.  They are probably my favorite 4 lug wheel!

Re: 1968 Beetle

Post by Attorney Isaiah Loophole on Tue Jun 07, 2016 6:14 pm

I took the vacuum advance distributor all apart and cleaned out all the old grease, shimmed the shaft and installed it in the car with new bosch points and condensor.   The car runs really nice now but still has the oil light flicker at idle but I am wondering if it has to do with the location of the oil pressure switch.  The case is a type 3 case and has been drilled on the top side behind the distributor for the pressure switch. If I barely touch the gas the light goes out so I am going to drive it more and see what happens.  I also swapped lock out plates on the shifter hoping for an easy fix on the 3rd and 4th gear issue but no luck....

Syncros are gone. The flicker might be the location of the switch. But the owners manual says that it's common to flicker at idle. Might bump up the oil weight.
